Photograph Sunday – Meet the Fur Family

Mini, Cooper and Max (left to right) wait outside the kitchen baby proof gate. Waiting in hope!

Don’t be fooled by their tiny brown eyes or sad demeanor.  These three dogs are loved and spoilt.  Mini and Cooper are our white, fluffy dogs.  Max is visiting with his Mum – who is also my Mum (I guess that kind of makes Max my brother).

They sit in continuous hope for treats from the kitchen.

The gate enables me to cook uninterrupted from the Toddler and the Fur Kids.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Do You Think Climate Change Influences Property Purchases?

Almost twenty years ago, I inspected a property for sale on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.  It was beautifully located right on the water – at sea level.

The real estate agent rang me afterwards to follow up.  “It’s a lovely home but I would be worried about climate change and rising sea levels”, was my response.  Today you may consider that a reasonable concern but twenty years ago, it probably was ‘out there’ and hence the agent unashamedly laughed at my feedback.

Not so long ago I had the opportunity to revisit that same property.  I stood and stared at the back yard which now has approximately five metres less garden than twenty years ago – it has simply eroded away.  I wonder if that real estate agent still laughs at climate change concerns from potential buyers?

This got me thinking to our home purchase almost two years ago.  Eventhough the house was located kilometers from the ocean, we still had a list of ‘must have’ features that were motivated by climate change and our desire to live more sustainably.

* Large north facing roof line for solar PV
* Ample north facing garden space for growing vegetables
* Area for below and above ground, rain water tanks
* A large undercover clothes drying area

Though not on the original list, having mature fruit and nut trees would also be on our list today.

I sense there are many other people today, who’s home must have feature list, has changed over the last twenty years.  Or am I still the strange ‘out there’ minority, that real estate agents laugh at?

I’m really interested to hear from real estate agents on this one – have you noticed any change to buyer’s needs due to climate change or the environment?

Our large undercover clothes drying area - enough space for four large washing loads.

A special thankyou, shout out to my Mum, who yesterday extended our undercover clothes drying area. Now the space dries even more clothes! Brilliant with all this rain we have had!

Photograph Sunday – Rainy Outside Play Days

We have had a couple of rainy days this week (great for the garden). This photograph was captured on one of those rainy days.

With a raincoat on but no boots, she plays with her toys and bikes outside.  Wonder what she is thinking?  It appears she is questioning the existence of rain or perhaps why she is getting wet.

On a another note, all the toys and bikes in this photo where picked up from the side of the road – destined for the tip. Now they again give joy to children.

Have a great weekend everyone!

My First Post Written Inside a Cot

A tiny glowing children’s carousel is all I can see – other than my illuminated smart phone.

It is now 9.30pm. Two and a half hours past our Little One’s bed time.  Usually a good sleeper, her current reluctance to go to sleep these last couple of days, is trying.

This photo was actually taken from within her cot (I am amazed that I fit).  I have tried everything else so why not get into the cot with her.  She starts to settle as I start to write.

I believe I am a good mum.  However the lack of sleep can change how I feel about my parenting abilities.  I am like every other Mother and get cranky, angry and impatient when over tired.  Again I am not a Super Woman.

In blogosphere it is easy to describe a perfect utopia world of finished projects, healthy home made snacks, inspiring veggie gardens and gorgeous upcycled furniture. I just feel it is important to occasionally balance such posts with what doesn’t work and or the challenges I face.

Honesty can be a wonderful gift to others who are overwhelmed,  discouraged and tired.

It is now just past 10pm and she has started to snore.  I will stay beside her for a little while longer, just to be certain and to savour the silence.
