Like every Sydneysider today, I awoke and looked out my window and thought ‘Oh my goodness what is going on?’.
The huge dust storm that swept across inner NSW then Canberra, reach Sydney early this morning.
With the rich reds you couldn’t help yourself being amazed at the colour of the light (and I don’t believe it is just a photographer thing).
This photograph was taken from our front room office at 8.00am this morning. May I add no enhancements have been added, just the wonder of light in a red dust storm.
Mini & Cooper (my dogs) as per usual were jumping around the front door to be let out so they can play on the grass. They were white fluffy puppies when they left but returned with a noticeably yellow tinge. It will be bath time for them soon (as well as their yellow dirty coloured bed).

Great video Sarhn. I hope that this type of dust storm does not start to become a regular event due to climate change.
Reminds me of Melbourne last year after Black Saturday. The city was filled with smoke from the bushfires and the sun was red through the smoke haze.

Hi Sarhn,
I loved the video. We caught the tail end of the dust storm. When I drove to work it looked like an early morning fog, except that it was 5.45pm. You could see the dust on my car when I finished work and I just felt plain grotty and griity by the time I got home. I wasn’t outside for more than a couple of miniutes. I can’t imagine what it was like in Sydney.
I hate to think how much top soil we lost with that one, not to mention the damage it could do to marine life when it hits the ocean. I hope it’s just another 1 in 1oo year event. I’m not holding my breath.

Hey Gav & Nevyn,
My mum was sharing with me last night that my great grandma many years ago, told her stories about her life living in Mildura VIC. Apparantely my great Nan said that she often had red dust storms come in like the one in Sydney yesteday. With all doors closed and wet towels over their windows and around doors they still couldn’t keep the red dust out of their homes.
I just feel again for our farmers as this is what they go through often and no one really reports it. It only gets on prime time TV if it happens in the City.
Like Nevyn said, Sydney now has our richest farming top soil all over it. No good in Sydney but it was needed on our farms.
Gav many people woke yesterday thinking their house was on fire. It must have been really scarey for those in VIC bush fires.

It was the first time of my life that I saw a dust storm. I have to stay that I was really afraid and tought it was already the end of the world!!! It was really unpleasant to go out with that dust that came into your eyes, nose, mouth. Bad souvenir for me but nice for photograhers!

Don’t worry Sierra even us photographers awoke thinking “what the hell is going on”. Then we picked up our cameras.
