After photographing a wedding at Mona Vale, I travelled to the end of Blues Point Road, North Sydney, to capture footage of Sydney City 5min before Earth Hour 2009. Then I captured the exact view again during the commencement of Earth Hour 2009 to compare the difference.
Notice the Sydney Opera House disappears……………it is like magic!

Tricia
call me a grumpy pessimist – but it still looks like there are a lot of lights on. It would be good to be in the same location in subsequent years to see whether the number of lights going off increases…Cheers, Tricia

Hi Tricia, At 8.30pm all the boats in the harbour sounded one large horn (which I missed picking up on the video) and the opera house lights went off and some of Luna Park rides.
What was really lovely which I didn’t mention was the large gathering crowd at Blues Point Road to watch the event. Many parents had brought their children down to watch which warmed my heart.
Earth Hour was formed and started right here in Sydney and yes Tricia it will be great to see how every year it grows in awareness.
Earth Hour was even supported in China for the first time this year.
Earth Hour is not so much about the power the world can save in one hour but more about global awareness – just look at the press attention that was given all around the world. With awareness comes change and not just for one hour every year but hopefully for 365 days a year.
I will get back to the same spot next year and hopefully we will see even more lights off and an even bigger response……..fingers crossed.
